Perfect Corned Beef Brisket Sandwich

Perfect Corned Beef Brisket
Ingredients:
1 - 3 pound corned beef brisket
1 - beef broth (one carton)
1 - can coke
1.5 cups of celery
1.5 cups of onion
1.5 cups of carrots.

directions: put celery, onions, carrots, broth, and coke in a crock pot set to High. Season then brown the brisket in a skillet. Put the browned brisket (fat side up) in the crock pot, cook for 2 hours. After two hours set to low and cook for 4 more hours.

Drain au jus then slice and make the perfect sandwich...

Perfect Corned Beef Brisket Sandwich.
Ingredients:
Perfectly sliced Perfect Corned Beef Brisket (above)
Hot deli mustard
Liverwurst
thick sliced Rye Bread
tomato
Avacado
Lettuce
Directions: toast two slices of bread, Schmear one slice with 1/2 Avacado, Schmear the other slice with Liverwurst, add mustard, sliced Brisket, tomato, and lettuce... Slice in half and dip in au jus Enjoy!

If you like cheese put some cheese on it, but then it becomes a "perfect Corned Beef Brisket Sandwich WITH cheese".

Guitar of the week... Two guitars, the Robben Ford Fender Signature, and the Robben Ford Baker Signature. If you rock at all you know Testament recently released, "formation of damnation" and - HOLY SHIT DOES IT ROCK! Their debut album was back in '87 "The Legacy" I was a freshman... now, 42 years old, the new record gives me the same chills down my spine 21 years later.

New bands are rocking my world as well...

Not the "newest" sensation, but ya Gotta love the "Transplants" TALL CANS IN THE AIR!

Three Days Grace's "RIOT" often starts my day. Great driving to work song.

Avenged Sevenfold, I could go on and on about these guys. I listen to them daily.

My family recently got the news that my youngest daughter is now also on the Autism spectrum. She has been going through many test (all of which are NOT covered by my BULSHIT insurance). Keep my family in your thoughts and I will be back posting soon.

Not doing a whole hell of a lot of posting these days... I've been very busy: feeding reindeer, dealing with Elf labor disputes, and trying to get my new Sirius satellite radio to work in the sleigh.

Seriously, "Song of the... Just Click Play" is dedicated to my lovely wife. She is quite simply, a Superhero. Taking care of a child with Autism (dealing with the countless therapists coming in and out of our house - as well as trips to the "Courage Center" for occupational therapy), she also raises two "wild princesses". This week she finished her Master's Degree, wow.

"on our way to fall in love" by Yo La Tengo is a song that reminds me of our first year married (also the first year she started Grad school). It's one of those songs, when I hear it I can't help thinking about my wife and how much I love and respect her.

Autism News: Hillary talks - Autism Speaks responds... I remain bitter

So I have had a few emails today asking if I am planning to Vote for Hillary based on THIS STORY. My answer is simple, "The elections are 11.5 months away"! I think it is foolish for anyone to be 100% sure for whom they are voting this early in the game.

I like what she said, more money devoted too:

• Expanding research to identify the causes of autism, including potential environmental reasons.

• Improving education and early detection and intervention, including creating a task force to investigate autism treatments and services.

• Training for teachers to instruct children with autism.

Perhaps she should add a babysitter fund for the 10's of thousands of parents of kids with Autism, who NEVER get to go out on regular dates.

Autism Speaks, responded: Since they are non-profit they will not endorse any candidate. In the same breath, families dealing with Autism are "non profit" too - so that's a good excuse NOT to endorse anyone.

Here's the deal folks... Not talking about all the emotional and stressful feelings associated with Autism, The financial portion is just adds to the mix... Maybe this will better help me explain:

1. monthly cost of my son's therapy=$8,900.00
2. monthly income=A LOT less than $8,900.00

Insurance companies help, but what insurance companies are the best at: finding loopholes NOT to cover. In fact, my 5 year old son has reached his LIFETIME LIMIT ON PHYSICAL THERAPY! Ahhhhhh! I knew this post would end up just pissing me off.

I will leave you with this, what is Autism?

Autism is a complex brain disorder that inhibits a person's ability to communicate and develop social relationships, and is often accompanied by extreme behavioral challenges. Autism spectrum disorders are diagnosed in one in 150 children in the United States, affecting four times as many boys as girls. The diagnosis of autism has increased tenfold in the last decade. Anyone who knows me, knows I am a proud father of a young man with Autism, as well as an obvious advocate for the cause.
This morning on The KQ Morning Show, Tom and the crew interviewed John Elder Robison, author of, Look Me In The Eye, a story about growing up with Asperger's Syndrome.
It was a great interview and I am excited to read the book. Mr. Robison is quite the interesting cat, older brother of Augusten Burroughs, "Running With Scissors". After quitting high school, John started tinkering with music instruments, he eventually ended up on the road with KISS. He designed Ace Frehley's signature "smoking Les Paul" as well as other Stage instruments.

From building guitars to designing games for "Milton Bradley", John Elder Robison has had an interesting life. I'm very excited to read his book. His blog is very inspirational as well.

Guitar(s) of the week: Three Gems all under $600

My idea this week is simple, find 3 guitars under $600.00. The only rule is, I would not hesitate to own any of these...

First up we have the new Epiphone, 1967 reissue Flying V with the uncovered humbuckers, two tone paintjob, and the vintage bridge. Best part of this is the price - $399.99 brand new.

Next we have another Epiphone... this is the Wild Kat, Semi-Hollow with P-90s, and a Bigsby Tremelo. $499 and this one is yours!

Finally, we have the Gretch Eletromatic G5120 - Toaster Top pick-ups, Bigby Tremelo, and a very sexy clear pickguard. This bad boy is yours for a mere $560 - and worth every penny.

I finally watched the movie, "Apocolypto" and wow, those Mayans were assholes!

It was no "Braveheart" and I still haven't seen "The Passion of the Christ" (and please people, don't tell me how it ends!).

"Apocolypto" reminded me of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Under the Bridge" video. If the video also had: human sacrifices, historic inaccuracies, plague, and slavery...

Anyway, the movie is about a Jaguar Paw (played by Rudy Youngblood a.k.a. Anthony Kiedis), a young hunter/warrior (pictured). He is rounded up with some other cats... taken to the Mayan city and... well, then it gets crazy.

Jaguar Paw runs (slow motion) for the rest of the movie. I could not get the RHCP song out of my head, so I paused the tivo... grabbed by iPod and listened to "under the bridge" while watching Jaguar Paw get chased through the jungle by Zero Wolf (played by Raoul Trujillo... he is one scary MF who could kick Jason's ass any day... AND Freddy Kruger, Charles Manson, that dude from "Saw", and zombies and vampires and who ever the hell you have to throw at him... But apparently he cant fuck with Anthony Keidis).

Apocolypto has everything, and maybe too much of everything. There are many scenes that made me cringe like a little school girl (thank the Mayan Gods for Tivo rewind). The over the top violence, makes "Braveheart" look like "Shrek", but I guess in some strange way I loved it.

I'll give Apocolypto 4 out of 5 beheadings... but only 3 out of 5 spears through the mid section... for a grand total of 8 out of 10 sacrificial heart removals (while the heart is still beating).

After spending over an hour complementing each other's outfits, they spent the afternoon admiring each other's gold plated stuff (chairs, floors, cars, canes, jaunty sashes, shoes, knives, forks, plates, toilets, and jewelry). As a parent of boy with Autism I was very happy when I read This Story.

Having a child who is lost is frustrating and heart wrenching for anyone, but when you have a kid who doesn't respond to their own name you can imagine how crazy these parents must of felt. Add to the mix a fear of crowds, hyper sensitivity, and not having the ability (or social skills) to do something as simple as call for help.

Every time my wife and I saw this on the news or talked about it we had a very hard time holding back the tears. This is one of our biggest fears.

"The family is all together," search group spokesman Chris Stadelman said. "As soon as they heard the report he was alive and doing fairly well, they gathered in a prayer circle."

This story ended great, most of the time it doesn't.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Allen family, you will be hard pressed to find a happier, more thankful group of people tonight.

RADIOHEAD - In Rainbows

I have listened to the new Radiohead CD 4 times in the last 30 hours or so and I love it.

Being a long time Radiohead fan I knew I would like it. I was not happy with "Hail to the Thief" - "in Rainbows" is more reminiscent of "Kid A" or "OK Computer".

Here's my critic quote,

"Great Driving CD - I don't mean the beats are hard driving beats, I mean this is a great CD to listen to while driving your car. I suppose it would be a great "riding in a cab, bus, or friend's car" CD, perhaps if you just walk everywhere, it would be good for that as well.
Thom York is whiny and bitchy as ever, and that's what I love about him."

BodySnatchers - So far one of my favorites.

Nude - beautiful orchestral intro to this song - flows into a sweet clean guitar, bass, keys and drums - Thom's voice is incredible. This song reminds me of the song "Exit Music (For a Film)" from OK Computer.

Arpeggi - The clean guitar parts are hypnotic - the song builds into a sweet frenzy.

All I Need - Ahhhhhh yeah. This is smooth.

Faust ARP - You gotta love a song where the first words are, "Wakey Wakey rise and shine". Great acoustic guitar and strings - muttering, confusing lyrics... I love every second of it.

Reckoner - cool bass intro - Thom at his best. This song is right out of the RadioHead Playbook. This is another one of my favorites.

house of cards - very cool guitar tone opens this song. Another smooooooth tune.

jigsaw falling into place - textbook Radiohead song - the acoustic guitar sounds great.

Videotape- Great tune, but at this point the least favorite track.

I have to give this CD a 9 out of 10 (what ever the hell that is supposed to mean), not just based on the CD itself, but also on the way it was marketed. People who don't like or even listen to Radiohead have heard about the creative way this CD was sold (or in some cases given away).

Fans should own the music, artists should own the copyrights and the record companies can see what it feels like to get the short end of the stick for a change.

Radiohead "In Rainbows" is worth the $9.99 I flopped down and I recommend this CD to ANY Radiohead fans out there.

I love guitars, ever since I was a little ankle biter I HAVE LOVED GUITARS. My father was a professional musician, (played with Conway Twitty from the very beginning until his untimely death in 1976) we always had guitars laying around the house. I'm by no means a great guitar player - I don't exactly remember when I started playing - I always just remember being able to pick up an axe and start strumming at a very young age.

I'm what you call an enthusiast, I'm good enough to figure out songs, but not good enough to teach anyone how to play them (does that even make sense). I don't read music, I am not a shredder, and NOBODY gets chills down their back after I play a lead. I love to play and whoever sees or hears me play understands my love for guitars and music... that is good enough for me.

TA made an interesting comment on my last Guitar of the Week post -

"I have a dream to sell my car and use the entire proceeds to buy guitars. Think the wife will be open to the idea?"

That comment got me thinking, what would I buy if I had a lump sum to dump on ONLY GUITARS? So I have been compiling lists... these first lists are all "NEW guitars" separated by price.

Here we go: 5 guitars under $1,000.00, 5 guitars between $1,000 and $2,500, and 5 guitars $2,501 and up... I tossed in an acoustic in each list for good measure.
If I could afford all these guitars I would purchase ALL THESE GUITARS.

A couple things have happened in the last week or so that have really changed things around here (in addition to the current NHL season starting).

First, due to time restraints and the need to make more money as well as spend more time with my kids and wife... I quit the band. Playing live was great, I loved it very much. Yoko was not involved and there are no hard feelings.

Second, I have discovered the COOLEST PEDAL EVER - The Boss RC-2 Loop Station.

Wow, what a great pedal - as I learn more about it, I am reminded of a recent Jackson post about Jamming.
The RC-2 is like having a little robot that jams with me when ever I want to. It plays the chord progressions exactly like you tell it to... The RC-2 (or as I like to call it the RC-D2 a.k.a. super fun portable good time rock and roll ROBOT JAMMING PEDAL!!!!!) has a 16 minute recording capacity and 11 channels for preset loops. Currently, all 11 of my channels are taken, but the GOOD TIME ROCK AND ROLL ROBOT set list changes every day

currently, the 11 channels go like this:

1. Blues in G
2. reggae progression
3. Shut your mouth and get your ass on the plane (a DBT song, basically a 1-4-5 blues progression)
4. Posetively 4th street
5. some riff in d
6. some Jazzy chord progression in g maj
7. Doctor Doctor Please (UFO)
8. rockin in the free world
9. goddamn lonely love (DBT song)
10. Avenues (old whiskey town song)
11. a g to a funky riff

Oh yeah, I forgot you can also loop stuff right from your iPOD onto this thing, That's what I did for "Doctor Doctor" and "shut your mouth".

Now whenever I get the urge to jam, I just plug into my robot and play with myself (great sentence).

Now I have only begun to scratch the surface of this thing - I am currently playing around with the drum tracks and what not, I'm sure I will be posting about this more in the future. Not sure how much I will use the drum tracks but it has a number of preset drum tracks playing numerous different styles.

Go get one of these things - definitely worth the money. Plug into your amp, or POD or whatever you play through and start jamming ANYTIME YOU WANT.

So much fun it should be illegal.

Guitar(s) of the Week: Remembering Leo

A majority of my Guitar of the Week" guitars have been Gibsons (V's, Les Pauls, SGs, and some acoustics).
Les Paul was only one of the fathers of Electric guitar - Leo Fender was another...

It's been 16 years since Leo Fender died, up until the time of his death he did what he loved. Built guitars and spent time with the loves of his life (strats and his wife Phyllis).

I think she will make a great "crazy" first lady. First she was the crazy "flying nun" then "Sybil" then she played the crazy run-away-bride in the "Smokey and Bandit" classic films.
She then went on to television to play the crazy mother of Dr. Abby Lockhart on "E.R." (Abby played by the super foxy Maura Tierney, pictured). I'm sure she has played other crazy people - I just don't have the time or desire to look Sally's profile up on IMDB.

When I first saw the headline to the story, Autism Whisperer, I immediately reached for my mocking guns (I have a conceal carry permit for my mocking guns). Once I read the story I holstered my weapons - I can totally see Jim Carrey relating to a kid with autism or rather a kid with autism relating to Carrey.
The world of Autism is filled with a lot of isolation, separated by moments of complete chaos. For a man who is not the birth father of a child with autism to have that kind of connection is very touching to me. I'm not going to talk any shit about Jenny McCarthy - she is in the public eye and is focusing on my family's cause... So go get em slugger.
My wife could be called an Autism Whisperer - I prefer the title, "Super-Hero".

I just watched the Oprah show on TIVO - I have counted to ten...
Here is what I have taken from the experience, Jenny McCarthy has a kid with Autism...

It would have been nice if Oprah had one expert guest on the panel, instead we got Holly Robinson Pete, and Jenny McCarthy giving us the "411" on "What a girl should do".

I am happy when Autism gets a nod, because Autism is my cause... Unfortunately, a celebrity face is needed for your cause to be noticed. This week, it's Oprah, Holly, and Jenny... Thanks girls.

I have to say, Holly Robinson Pete was more informative than Jenny... count to ten... think positive...

Jenny did have one bit of advice I think is great for ANYONE who knows ANYONE with a child with autism... Offer to babysit! it sounds so simple but it's the BEST advice I have EVER heard.

Let's Talk About Speaker Cabinets!

Lately, I have been exploring the idea of downsizing my speaker cabinet.

Currently, I'm using a slant 4 x 12 Marshall JCM 800 1960a with the 75 watt Celestians. Great cabinet - too damn heavy and bulky for my need.

Looking for 2 x 12 or even a 1 x 12 - not sure exactly what I want to do, that is why I have started the exploration team... YOU, READER (all 6 of you).

1 x 12 may well do the trick, especially if the cabinet is a convertible (ability to make run open back or closed back).

Cabinets without speakers can run over $100 - add a speaker and the next think you know your $200 plus into a small speaker cab.

Craig's list has not been a big help as everyone is selling 4 x 12.

Here are my options as I see it...

Option 1
Epiphone makes solid 1x12 extension cabinet for the Valve Junior. The cabinet sounds great with the 16 ohm Eminence Lady Luck 70 watt Speaker.
The open back design can be easily modified to put in a removable cover for the open back. At around $100 it is almost impossible to find a better deal on a brand new speaker cab, especially one that sounds this good.

Oh did I mention it is weighs less than my 4x12?

Option 2
Find someone who can build me a 1 x 12 speaker cab Cheap (and by cheap, I mean I will buy the wood and a 12 pack of beer... I have someone in mind for this project) - then pop in a Eminence Texas Heat Speaker (for less than $70) - add wiring and input (Another $20). When it's all said and done I be paying more than I would with Option 1.

Option 3
Craig's list... I have seen 2x12s on craigslist for as little as $175 - but craigslist can sometimes be a real crap shoot.

Option 4
HEY, DOES ANYONE OUT THERE HAVE AN OLD 2X12 OR 1X12 CABINET YOU WANT TO GET RID OF?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

The past couple of weeks: Been Listening too...

Jason Isbell: Sirens of the Ditch

80% of this cd was produced by fellow Drive-By Trucker, Patterson Hood. 20% of the CD is self produced.

Truley a great record, don't make the mistake like me and think you are going to get a stripped down DBT CD. Even though DBT bassist, Shonna Tucker, and DBT drummer, Brad Morgan play on it. Patterson Hood even plays piano on the song "Shotgun Wedding" and his father the great, David Hood plays bass on a couple tracks. This CD celebrates Jason Isbell - you can hear every little nuance he adds to the DBT all wrapped up in this CD.

I found it interesting he thanked The Black Crowes, and Bobby Bare Jr. in the liner notes... and if anyone out there knows of any CDs where Jason teams up with Bobby or the Robinson Brothers, please let me know.

Songs like "Brand New Kind Of Actress", and "Try" (which sounds like an old Eagles song) immediately got my attention, soon to follow was the song, "Hurricanes and Hand Grenades" (a great little bluesy number).
After about the 3rd or 4th time I listened to Sirens in the Ditch, other songs started to become favorites. "Dress Blues" where Jason writes about a high-school classmate who lost his life fighting in Iraq. "Chicago Promenade" a tribute to his late Grandfather (bit of DBT trivia, Jason also wrote the song "The day John Henry Died" about his beloved, grandfather).

This is a great record and I highly advise you to go purchase it.

INTO THE TWANGY-FIRST CENTURY

Bluegrass versions of Motown classics! No need to say any more. If you like bluegrass AND motown and your busy schedule does not allow for you to take time to listen to both separately - go get this CD in the Bargain bin.

Jim Photoglo formed this band in the 90's with: Russell Smith of The Amazing Rhythm Aces, Bernie Leadon of the Eagles (often referred to as the Forgotten Eagle) and hit-songwriter Vince Melamed.

I like to play this band as well as the next one on set breaks. It's funny to see someone's reaction to these cover tunes.

Hayseed Dixie - Any or All CDS are worth it.

My drummer, Shawn turned me onto Hayseed Dixie - The first song I ever heard from Hayseed was Shoot the Thrill by AC/DC. After that I was hooked - I went out and bought everything they had.

Let's talk about Volume Pedals Man!

I am in the market for a Volume Pedal - mainly for slide / bend fills - and... well.. the ability to control volume with my foot.

The following VPs make up my short list of acceptable units, under $100...

Ernie Ball VP Jr. Passive Volume Pedal
This is the VP of choice of all the country dudes out there. Sexy design with a nice wide foot pedal. The Ernie Ball also has a nice tuner out feature, (Ernie Ball came up with the idea - other VPs are following). The tuner out allows the player to turn the volume all the way down (using the pedal) and the tuner still gets a signal...
This pedal reminds me of a skate board with all the grip tape on the surface. Remember those old Banzai skateboards???

Boss FV-500H Mono Volume Pedal - This does everything the EB VP JR. does for about $15 cheaper. The dimensions are slightly smaller, still the expression pedal itself is nice and large.

Jum Dunlop GCB-80 High Gain Volume Pedal. Can't go wrong with a Dunlop - built to last like all other JD pedals, and this one goes for around $60. Plus no power needed for this model.

Morley Little Alligator Volume Pedal - Great for the price (around $50) but seems a little flimsy. Being a big fat guy I worry I would break this thing.

There you have it, I am leaning toward the BOSS - I have had great luck with all my BOSS pedals over the years.

I think this will make a great addition to my gear. I have been working on my slide playing and use my volume pot (to sneak up on a note) - the pedal will make that a lot easier. It will also add to my control when I switch guitars - My SG is much louder than my LP.

If anyone out there who has experience with any of the above VPs let me know - I'm mainly going by pedals I have actually tried.

The Distillers: Sing Sing Death House

I could listen to Brody Dalle's sexy voice all day long - her scream is like a slice of heaven.
This CD was originally released in 2002 so it's nothing new, go buy it in the used bin. Brody is now in the band Spinnerette with former Distiller, Tony Bevilacqua and Alain Johannes from Queens of the Stoneage.
Favorite song: City of Angels

Drive-By Truckers, "Dirty South"

Drive-By Truckers was co-founded by Patterson Hood (son of legendary bassist David Hood of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section) and longtime friend and musical "partner in crime", Mike Cooley in Athens, Georgia, in 1996.
8 records later they are still going strong. Dirty South is one of the best records I have owned in the past 10 years. 3 singer/songwriter/guitarists in the band, the songs never sound the same: "Where the Devil don't go" and "cottonseed" show off Mike Cooley's "GangstaBilly" style.
"Tornadoes" and "Putting People On The Moon" show the storyteller side of Patterson Hood.
"The Day John Henry Died" and "Goddamn Lonely Love" Show that Jason Isbell's country style is a perfect match for the band (his slide steel work is pretty damn nice too).
There are two ANTI-Buford Pusser songs on the CD (remember Buford from the "Walking Tall" Movies? One in 1973 the other in 2004 with THE Rock) - "Boys From Alabama" and "Buford Stick" are songs about "The other side of the story".
Favorite song:If I have to choose one... it's impossible. Carl Perkins Cadillac and Danko/Manuel are pretty awesome.

Hank 3, "Straight to Hell"

Hank Williams III, Grandson of the great Hank Williams, Son of the crazy Hank "are you ready for some football" Williams Jr.
Hank 3 is an interesting cat - He looks and sounds exactly like his grandfather (He has that signature yodel down pat). He is backed by an incredible group of players.
His songwriting has no limits, just when you think he may be a "one trick pony" he surprises you on the next song.
To make Hank 3 even cooler... He fronts a death metal band called ASSJACK. Whenever you see Hank 3, ASSJACK always gets the last set.
I dig anyone who's name sounds like either an action movie or video game.
